In last season's finale, an undercover operation ended in bloody catastrophe when Maura's biological father, fugitive gangster Paddy Doyle, suddenly appeared on the scene to protect his daughter and opened fire, setting off a deadly reaction. When the shooting finally stopped and the smoke cleared, the suspect lay dead, Agent Gabriel Dean was wounded, and Paddy Doyle was in critical condition – after being shot by Jane.
Now, with her father near death in the hospital, Maura accuses Jane of playing judge, jury and executioner. Jane desperately tries to repair their friendship even as everything else in her life seems to be falling apart. Her love affair with Gabriel Dean is on the skids because he's been keeping secrets from her. She's under investigation by Internal Affairs, accused of being a dirty cop and in collusion with Paddy Doyle. Even her job as a detective may be over when she's transferred out of homicide and into the evidence-management unit.
Things are no easier for her at home. Jane's well-meaning mother, Angela, moves in and tries to play counselor, forcing Jane to think back to how her friendship with Maura began. Jane realizes this is a friendship worth fighting for, and she will do what it takes to save it...even if it means tracking down the shocking secret about Maura's real mother.
