Jeff Daniels can next be seen in the independent film Imaginary Heroes, co-starring Sigourney Weaver. Most recently, he appeared with Robert Duvall in Gods and Generals, the screen adaptation of Jeff Shaara's best-selling novel. His dramatic talent and comedic abilities are evident in his many feature films, including Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo; Something Wild; The Butcher's Wife; Gettysburg; Terms of Endearment, opposite Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger; Arachnophobia; Dumb & Dumber, opposite Jim Carrey; Blood Work; The Hours; and Ragtime, in which he made his feature film debut. Daniels' television credits include Robert Altman's The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, Lee Grant's No Place Like Home, A&E's The Crossing and HBO's Cheaters. He also hosted NBC's Saturday Night Live. Daniels' successful acting career also includes appearances in many Broadway productions, such as Lanford Wilson's Redwood Curtain and Fifth of July, for which he received a Drama Desk Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has also achieved much success in off-Broadway productions. He received a Drama Desk nomination for his performance in Lemon Sky and an Obie Award for his role in Johnny Got His Gun, a production by the Circle Repertory Company.

Endeavoring to encourage his passion for theater in others, Daniels founded the Purple Rose Theater Company in his hometown, Chelsea, Mich. He has premiered all of his plays there, including Shoe Man, which received the Detroit News Critics Award for Best New Play; The Tropical Pickle; The Vast Difference; Thy Kingdom's Coming; Apartment 3A; Boom Town; Escanaba in da Moonlight; and American Theatre Critics Association nominee for Best New Play, Across the Way. His first film as writer, director and actor, Escanaba in da Moonlight, based on his play of the same name, was produced through his company, Purple Rose Films. The company's second film, Super Sucker, won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colo.
