Patti LuPone
Q: What do you remember about the phenomenon with Howard Cosell and Monday Night Football®?
A: I remember I had to watch it in my house growing up, and I don't understand football to this day. I couldn't bear the sound of Howard Cosell's voice. I was one of those people who didn't like him.
Q: What was it, then, that drew you to this film?
A: Having the chance to work with John Turturro and the cast: Eli Wallach, John Heard, Kevin Anderson and director Ernest Dickerson. And, of course, being the only girl in a group of guys!
Q: Tell me about your character and her relationship with Howard Cosell.
A: There's little known about Emmy Cosell, because I think she was very camera shy. Howard was as devoted to her as she was to him. He went through a lot and she supported him. They loved each other very much. I think his life ended when she died. I think he was capable of very deep emotions as well as very deep intellect.
Q: What was it like to work with John Turturro?
A: I'm very lucky to be working with John. Not only is he a wonderful actor but also a generous actor. He and I have formed a relationship as John and Patti, and I think that's translating to the camera.
