He's flashy, quick-witted and cute, but without a college degree Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) can't land a decent NYC white-collar job, in Cocktail. With a contagious smile, the energetic Flanagan decides to pursue a business degree in an effort to better himself. To make ends meet he mixes alcoholic elixirs at a high-energy nightclub owned by his charismatic friend and mentor Douglas Coughlin (Bryan Brown). Soon Flanagan, wooed by easy cash and beautiful faces, quits school to learn the bar business and buy his own classy cocktail joint. Coughlin teaches him everything he knows, including how to entertain customers behind the bar and court rich women. Flanagan decides to go to Jamaica where he can make a great deal of money, and return to New York to set himself up as the owner of his new bar. Complications arise when Flanagan meets the artsy, beautiful Jordan on the beaches of Jamaica. In the end, Flanagan must choose between a slick lifestyle or true love.
