Who would have thought that the phrase "You'll put your eye out" would become synonymous with Christmas? But anyone who has seen A Christmas Story would be hard-pressed not to repeat that much-quoted line whenever the holiday classic is mentioned.

Based on writer/radio personality Jean Shepherd's collection of short stories entitled In God We Trust (All Others Pay Cash), A Christmas Story recalls a young boy's longing for a prized Christmas gift: a Daisy Red Ryder 200 Shot Carbine Action BB Air Rifle. But the film relates much more. Set in the '40s, A Christmas Story is not so much a nostalgic nod to Christmas' past as it is a testament to the universal qualities of family life, holiday traditions and boyhood. The script -- adapted by director Bob Clark, Leigh Brown and Jean Shepherd -- beautifully captures the absurdity and poignancy of Christmas. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon are well cast as the parents of the story's protagonist, Ralphie (played by Peter Billingsley), and his younger brother Randy (Ian Petrella.) The distinctive voice of the narrator -- the grown-up Ralphie -- is none other than the story's author, Jean Shepherd.
