What is the biggest difference between the TV series and your novels?
The series has to be more streamlined, of course. You can't take a 500-page book and make it into a one-hour episode. So subplots and peripheral characters have to be pared away. That's okay. It gives each hour episode a lot more punch and pace. Books are a more leisurely pleasure.
Do you weigh in on the episode scripts before they're shot?
The executive producers send me the concept outlines and then drafts of the scripts. The writing team is veteran and they know what they're doing in terms of story and plot. What I try to do is make sure the characters in the script are reasonably consistent with the characters in the novels. I spent many years creating these people and I feel quite a bit of loyalty to them. With that said, it's been a marvelously smooth collaboration. And I feel honored to be working with such consummate professionals.
