Rick Schroder
(Dr. Tom Foster)
Q: Did you read the script and immediately accept?
A: Part of the reason I wanted to do this movie was because it was fresh, something I haven't done before. It was exciting because it was something new I could learn about.
Q: Did you do any research for your part?
A: I went to a hospital and observed. I saw the doctors -- how they walked, how they dressed and how relaxed they seemed to be in their environment. They're very confident and very capable people who know what they're doing. They're total professionals.
Q: How does the relationship change between your character and JoBeth Williams' character, Jeanette?
A: Nurse Jeanette and I are on opposite sides, but throughout the film, we learned that we have to work together to save these people.
Q: Describe the isolation and the lack of technology and the effect it had on the situation.
A: It was back to the basics for the staff at the Memorial Hermann. It was back to taking blood pressure and pulses by hand. It was bagging people with the bag instead of the respirators, trying to remember that old training that they had been given. And I'm in surgery when the power goes off. Talk about drama. That is drama, operating by flashlight.
Q: Finish this sentence: "The drama of 14 HOURS comes from. . ."
A: The characters. It comes from the situation but more so from the way the characters react to the situation. It's definitely a character-driven movie.
Q: Do you consider these people heroes? Do you consider your character a hero?
A: I consider them more than heroes. I consider them angels, especially the nurses. These men and women care so much about their patients. They are undervalued. I'm glad people are out there who can do this.
Q: What is 14 HOURS about?
A: 14 HOURS is about facing a challenge, meeting it head on, overcoming it and then, in the end, walking out as a stronger and better person because of the challenge. Some people can't handle the challenge and crumble, while some people rise up and become leaders. And that's what ends up happening with 14 HOURS.
