Steven Hill
(District Attorney Adam Schiff)
Schiff (Seasons 9-10) is well aware of the impact that his office's homicide prosecutions have on New York -- and the country. After years working in the New York legal system, Schiff both influences and, at times, is influenced by public opinion and politics. His conservative bent often puts him at odds with McCoy and Carmichael, yet at the end of the day, no one carries the burden of their controversial prosecutions more than Schiff.
In 1946, Hill made his Broadway debut as Marlon Brando's understudy in the
drama A Flag Is Born. A veteran of stage and screen, Hill began his
television career in 1958. He starred in the popular series Mission
Impossible as the original lead character, Daniel Briggs. After taking
a ten-year-plus hiatus from acting, Hill returned to film, playing Meryl
Streep's father in the movie Heartburn. Hill portrayed the
conservative and forthright, D.A. Adam Schiff from the series' beginning in
1990 until 1999.
