A sexy Croatian doctor who begins his career at Country General by moonlighting, Kovac soon earns a full-time position in the er. Kovac often gets overly involved in his patients' cases, which causes friction between him and the chief of emergency medicine, Dr. Kerry Weaver. Though he has found love with medical student Abby Lockheart, the tragic deaths of his wife and young child in Croatia still haunt him.

Born in Sibenik, Croatia, Goran Visnjic (Dr. Luka Kovac 1999-) was trained as a paratrooper in the Croatian army at age 18, but later focused on an acting career. He trained at the Academy of Performing Arts in Zagreb and began acting in television productions in the early '90s. He can be seen in such feature films as Welcome to Sarajevo, The Peacemaker (With George Clooney), Practical Magic, Committed, The Deep End and Posljednja volja (The Last Will). He is also featured in Madonna's 1998 music video, "The Power of Goodbye."
