Jess Cagle was named assistant managing editor for PEOPLE in September, 2006, overseeing movie and television coverage for the world’s most popular magazine. He was previously editor-at-large for PEOPLE.
Throughout his 19-year career at Time Inc., Cagle has interviewed Hollywood’s biggest celebrities including: Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Whitney Houston, Paris Hilton, Kevin Costner, Reese Witherspoon, Kirstie Alley and Elizabeth Taylor.
Cagle began his career as a reporter-researcher for PEOPLE in 1987. In 1990, he joined Entertainment Weekly as a staff writer soon after the magazine’s launch. He spent 10 years at EW covering movies, writing news-making cover stories on topics ranging from Waterworld to gay Hollywood and launching the magazine’s “Stage” section.
In 2000, Cagle moved to LA where he served as TIME’s west coast senior editor. While at TIME, he covered the entertainment industry, and produced cover stories on major stars including Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise. Two years later, he crossed the country again, returning to New York and to PEOPLE as senior editor for entertainment. He helped launch PEOPLE’s first “Hollywood Daily” editions in 2004 and has been responsible for breaking some of the magazine’s biggest celebrity stories, including Katie Holmes’s pregnancy.
After graduating from Baylor University with a BA in Journalism and Russian in 1987, Cagle did a brief stint at his hometown paper, the Abilene (TX) Reporter-News, before a move to New York brought him to PEOPLE.
Cagle is also a regular contributor to CBS News, appearing weekly on The Early Show. He has also offered commentary on a number of news and entertainment shows, including The View, CNN Showbiz Tonight and Entertainment Tonight.
Cagle lives in Manhattan and Hillsdale, NY, with his partner, Shawn Henderson.
