The Boston Police Department's Gang Unit – known officially as the Youth Violence Strike Force (YVSF) – is a multi-agency task force made up of about 66 sworn officers, detectives and supervisors. The YVSF works in collaboration with representatives from numerous agencies and institutions, including federal, state and local law enforcement, the United States Attorney's Office, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, the Parole and Probation Office, the Department of Youth Services, city agencies and clergy. The primary focus of the YVSF is to reduce gang violence, illegal gun possession and violent crime in their communities. The YVSF has a three-pronged mission: Prevention, Intervention and Apprehension. Its focus is on keeping violent offenders off the streets and at-risk youth out of trouble.
