The Boston Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team has the responsibility for controlling and coordinating a police response when the department is confronted with a special threat situation. The mandate of the SWAT Team is to protect life and property and to apprehend suspects. This is accomplished using trained programmed reactions and tactics designed to reduce tension, suppress overreaction and, if possible, cause the suspect to surrender without violence or resistance. Special weapons, equipment and techniques are designed to reduce the risk to law enforcement personnel, innocent citizens and suspects in dangerous situations. In addition, SWAT Team members patrol the streets in vehicles with specialized equipment and weapons, responding to all gun-related calls and serving all warrants when firearms are expected to be on the premise. The SWAT Team also escorts and protects designated protectees of various government agencies.
